Hello there.
My name is Emilio (he/him) and I’m a photographer and musician based out of Denton, TX in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I’ve been taking photographs since I was very young — I very distinctly remember my first 35mm point and shoot cameras as a kid. As music came into my life, I put the camera down to focus on that, but after graduating with a degree in jazz saxophone, I was left feeling very creatively uninspired and in need of a new outlet to hopefully rekindle those energies. Not only did picking up a camera help me to fall back in love with music, I found that I truly had a passion for being behind the lens.
Seemingly on a whim, I invested in my first professional camera and quickly found myself immersed in the beauty of the world that photography has helped me to fully realize.
I see things differently now.
I see light differently.
I see people differently.
I feel things differently.
It wasn’t long before I got ahold of another 35mm camera to shoot alongside my digital camera, and I found a different kind of beauty in that process. Just as I began taking photos with much more intention, that quality seeped into my digital photos, and eventually into my life.
My interest in self-portraiture came around the same time, developing as a means to experiment and try new ideas and techniques without the pressure of feeling like I needed to capture anything to show for it, soon becoming another means for my artistic expression.
Nowadays, I only photograph on film. It just feels different. For me, it’s less about being behind the camera and more about the connections made, stories shared, and emotions felt. The resulting photographs are merely a relic of that moment, a reminder of a feeling, a jogged memory…a reminder to slow down and experience what is happening right before your eyes amidst the shroud of our modern day and age.
